Takt Talk with Hanae Utamura
Wednesday, June 22, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Takt Academy is very happy to present Hanae Utamura
‘What is the construction of experience today and how do we form our world from images and information?” questions Hanae Utamura, a Japanese artist who calls upon history, time and process as medium to find and trace the boundary between thought and place. Her works investigate a dialog of negotiation – between artist and environment, intentions and conditions – all of which play into the final outcome in a manner not unlike that of life itself.’
– Rebecca Vickers
Hanae Utamura works with diverse range of media: performance, video, sound, text, found object and site specific installation. She examined the acceleration of the working world in earlier pieces such as the Secret Performance Series (2009 – 2013), now Utamura is focusing on the interrelation of work and leisure. In her last project ‘Holiday at War’, Hanae Utamura combined a wide range of image and text material with light projections and object arrangements to create a complex spatial installation, in which she visualizes the transformation processes of historical time-places as the specific site of socio-political constructs. She transposes surfaces such as geographical, architectural surfaces to object’s surfaces. Then she applies specific action on them that unfolds a history, ideology and memory of the place. In its process, the work takes to a site of abstraction where she considers it as a site of possibilities and alternatives can be re-imagined.
Hanae Utamura has completed a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College (2004) and master’s degree in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design (2010) in London. Hanae was a resident artist in Künstlerhaus Bethanien until last March with a grant support from Pola Art Foundation in Japan. In 2014, she was a visual art fellow at Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany, where she organized site specific video performance exhibition titled ‘Across the Grid’.
