What does the alter ego of a flower look like? What does silence feel like in space? Chin Yuen’s paintings demonstrate her continuous contemplation on how to create alternate realities with abstraction. Currently, Yuen is interested in expressing the inevitable distance between memory and experience. Her residency in Berlin prompts her to record her experiences of the city. She uses photography to capture things she encounters in her daily routine and incorporates them into her paintings. Yuen is consciously aware of the fact that all manners of record–photography, painting, and the visual imprint in her mind–are intrinsically removed from the original experience. The multi-layering of her creations accentuates the illusiveness and subjectivity of memory, and offer her a souvenir of her own making.
