‘Melt (video still)’ | 2016 | Duration: 9.16 mins
Cristal Johnson (Melbourne, Australia) investigates the contingent nature of formless substances, the entropic irreversibility of invading spaces over time and the celebration of impermanence.
Johnson’s work provides insight into impermanent materials in various states of change, therefore challenging the traditional assumption that sculptural practice is definitive or permanent. The configuration of materials seeks to question the way we observe and engage with active substances over time. The works aim to produce reactions from those who experience them, with satisfaction, unease and/or excitement.
