Nathan Smallwood

My work as a painter is strongly influenced by my background in music, which I see as a kind of abstract art form itself. I approach painting in much the same spirit as a composer, arranging forms and rhythms held in balance through a sense of internal resonance. To translate my creative process into a visual mode, I create abstract compositions centered around harmony and repetition. For inspiration, I draw from themes found in sacred art from around the world which evoke a sense of something transcendent. I also look to the forms and colors of nature, which is my own personal connection to the sublime.
